Do electric superchargers really work?

Question:
On ebay, they sell battery driven superchargers. They only provide a slight increase in HP, but they're in expensive. My only concern is, do they actually work? I know vortex generators don't, I don't want to get conned into something like that. I mean, theoretically, they should work since they provide a fuel chip and all that, but I just want to know if anyone has used one, and if it works. Also, has anyone ever seen of these cause engine damage?

My 91 buick park ave.is getting power but will not start ,the starter just clicks what could it be?

well if you want to pay that money for .5-1 psi of boost go ahead, most magazines say they are crap and don't work, but i have real boost so i don't need it. I severely doubt it will cause engine damage, just don't expect any significant gains
