When I press on the gas the rattle starts, there is another different rattle when it idles.?

2004 nissan xterra... the rattle seems to be getting worse. They are both located underneath my car and its loud when I drive. It sounds like metal rattling. I'm afraid to take it to a repair shop, because I'm a girl, I'm afraid they are going to charge me an arm and a leg, and unfortunately I dont have a spare arm or leg to give. Any one who can help give me some advise I would really appreciate it.

Sounds like loose exhaust system, wich i also have right now and have an appointment to get fixed tomarrow. In my case its a clamp that came loose. Look under your car and see if your exaust is hanging low. If so, its probably like mine and the clamp rusted loose. They said they can probably weld it back on for $25. Good luck!

If its from under the engine, it could be an oil problem. if its a rattle coming from the engine itself when you push on the pedal it could be one of many things.

eat's answer is good. Being you have an x terra you could go under it yourself and bang on the exhaust. Most times I hear this it is a heat shield coming in contact with the exhaust some where. A good shop charges less than 30 minutes labor for this type of problem. If it is in the exhaust such as the catalytic converter coming apart internally then most car manufacturers will cover this problem under the extended emission warranty. Check with the manufacturer for this if the shop finds it's in the cat.
