if it's a very faint grinding kinda noise then your brake pads are very very worn and will need changing. it'll be because the brake calipers are closing on the disc and the pad is almost worn through, so instead of pad on metal you get metal on metal - hence the noise. My advice is if you know anyone handy with cars it will take them 2 mins to check, if not get it to a garage asap.2001 ford explorer sporttrac , check engine light came on?

Take it to a GARAGE!Whatever you do (unless you want all new brakes, tyres, shock absorbers etc), don't take it to these 'quick-fit' places, you'll be ripped off!

If you're unsure it may be better to take your car to a brake specialist for a safety inspection and analysis. It could be a dust build-up between the brake parts, glazing of the brake pad material, or brake wear.Your brakes could be gone, or I'd say your caliper might be sticking. In otherword the piston is pushed out and cause the pad to rub against the rotor even while you are not braking. Making the squeaking. You might need new brake calipers, or they might need to be rebuilt. (Usually easier and cheaper to just replace the caliper)
Or possibly new brakes either way you should have a mechanic look at them just to be sure.
If you just had your brakes done, you should allow at least a 200 mile break in period on the brakes. but if the squeaking persist have em checked out.

Make sure you have a pro do your brakes.

hi, sounds like a garage job, it could be that the pad is not retracting as it should, and its catching on the disc, you touch the brake pedal, it retracts after that and the noise goes, till the next time it decides to stick.l agree with other comments about Quick fitter places or OEM garages or lying slags as l call themMore Questions & Answers ...
