Question:
I didn't die on me, but the temp guage got all the way to the top. I had been sitting in the drive-thru for like 10 minutes and that's the only time it's happened. So I blasted the heater and the temp went back down. This was about 4 or 5 days ago and the car has not overheated again since, but I also haven't just had it at idle like that either, just regular driving. This was happening last summer so I replaced a fan. The car has two fans in the front (95 Accord LX) and I'm not sure which one I replaced...I don't remember which one I put in, but it fixed the problem.until now anyway. I also have an oil leak, will a low oil level cause a car to do this?
Answers:
Do you have a !!Sears or does Sears havea you.?
Your low oil will cause wear and tear on the engine, and over time will increase the heat factor of the engine. Something else to check first, check your anti-freeze level, and make sure it is topped off and what the boiling point is (the temp the anti-freeze level is set at for freezing and boiling). Also, check the thermo-stat and the belts.these are two cheaper methods, and will also help on making sure the car lasts longer. Most overheating problems is caused by the anti-freeze being not adjusted right temp. or being low on fluid.
Second most common is the thermo-stat, third the belts being worn and pulley's going out. Then finally the fan.
With the car not overheating while you are driving, and only idling, it leads me to believe that it is probably not the Fan, but your fluid and thermo-stat.
Good luck.
your coolant fan is not working.
you could be low on antifreeze/coolant, or you could have a blocked up radiator. have someone check your coolant levels, and flush your radiator, and check thermostat.

It sounds like you may have a boy car. You should trade it for a girl car who doesn't get so hot and bothered by you. Just make sure it's not a same sex car or you'll have the same problem. Why does my car idle high after coming to a stop?
You probably have a fan not working to cool the radiator. It is dangerous for you engine to get that hot. It can cause severe damage to the engine. You did the right thing by turning your heater on ( good thinking ). You should check your oil level on a regular basis. Low oil would not have caused this problem.1995 Chevy Silverado 1/2 ton transmission?
Yes, low oil level can cause the engine to overheat - oil is as much a coolant almost as the water. You may want to have your radiator checked - they don't last forever.I think you already know that idling for ten minutes doesn't allow the engine sufficient cooling, and the answer to that is either to :-
turn the engine off when in a long queue, or:-

Do i have to replace all the electronic components if my heater core went out?
It sounds like your fans arent coming on. BOTH need to come on in order for the engine to stay cool. Engine cooling systems are designed to keep the engine at a constant temperature whether idling or driving down the freeway. Your thermostat is fine if it only overheated that one time while idling. Check your Temperature sensor, it could be going haywire, and not kicking the fans on. Let the car warm up, leave it idle, and see if the fans come on, if they don't, replace the sensor. How much will it cost for a clutch change on a 94 2.2 vtec prelude?
If one or both your electric fans are not working, check that the ballast resistors are not blown. Unfortunately they can be hard to find, but may look like a coil of thick wire around a porcelain insulator, sometimes inside a perforated metal box. These typically have a low resistance, but if they burn out the fan will not work.Is freon gas combustible? (fridge gas)?
The thermostat is typically located in a bulbous fitting at the engine end of the thick hose that leads to the top of the radiator. You can just have it replaced with a new sealing gasket, or you can check it by removing it and placing on a pan of water on a stove with a thermometer beside it. Heat slowly to boiling. The t'stat has a disk about 1.5 to 2 inches across on a central stalk which seats against the body. The stalk sits in a wax pellet inside a little metal holder.. When the wax melts, it expands and pushes the disk away from the body of the t'stat, allowing water to flow through. In most cars it should be open at 80C, that's 176F. Some open at 90C, that's 194F. If you take it out, you will probably have to replace the gasket or the system will probably leak when hot.
Low oil can definitely cause your engine to overheat, but it would have to be pretty drastic to get the level right down soon after you have topped it up.
My front passenger side tire leans out, help!?
first look in the radiator and see if you have antifreeze. if you dont then add some and see if it leaks out, you may have a hose cracked, radiator leak or water pump outMore Questions & Answers ...
