Difference between the Turbo and Supercharger?

Question:
What is the difference between the Turbo and a Supercharger? I have a turbo car (WRX but looking to get rid of it for the SRT 8) I see that there is kits for both but dont know the difference between the two. Can someone tell me the difference?

A turbochargers are air compressors driven by exhaust gases.

Superchargers are driven by the serpentine belt system. they can either be centrifugal or roots types.

superchargers begin pumping air immediately and exactly with the engines acceleration so they create more torque that turbochargers but typically less horsepower gains than turbos, but they have no lag

turbochargers since driven by exhaust gases have a lag, but they create more boost in higher RPM ranges resulting in a higher horsepower gains than superchargers.

they both have drawbacks and advantages you must pick the one that will complement your driving style. Drag racers typically do better with superchargers. Highway or road racers find turbos to be more helpfull in thier style.

How would i turn the idle down in a 1989 potiac grand am?

Yes, turbos tend to pump hot air becuase they are located by the exhaust, but you can remedy the hot air problem with a decent intercooler system. In some cases they can reduce the temperature lower than outside air temp.

How do you get to the gas tank in a '97 Buick Le Sabre?

a turbo is exhaust pressure driven, and a super charger is belt or gear driven. the turbo turns off the exhaust gasses of the engine, and the surper charger is driven off the gearing or a big grooved belt.

Ac ????

A turbo charger uses exhaust gas to spin the impeller to compress more air into the air/fuel mixture. it only spools as the the exhaust gasses pass through the system.

Anyone think that manual transmission is hard?

a super charger is belt driven... it uses a pulley and belt to spin the impeller and compress more air into the air/fuel mixture. it is always spooling.

Either is a good way to add more power to a motor.

ENGINE TREATMENT 'Greased Lightning '?

The key difference between a turbocharger and a supercharger is its power supply. Something has to supply the power to run the air compressor. In a supercharger, there is a belt that connects directly to the engine. It gets its power the same way that the water pump or alternator does. A turbocharger, on the other hand, gets its power from the exhaust stream. The exhaust runs through a turbine, which in turn spins the compressor
There are tradeoffs in both systems. In theory, a turbocharger is more efficient because it is using the "wasted" energy in the exhaust stream for its power source. On the other hand, a turbocharger causes some amount of back pressure in the exhaust system and tends to provide less boost until the engine is running at higher RPMs. Superchargers are easier to install but tend to be more expensive.

What could be wrong with my car?

i own a shop, and a turbo uses hot exhaust air and pushes it back through the engine creating a lot of heat in the engine and it shortens the life of any engine,as to a super charger uses a cool out side air source to force cooler air through the engine its a lot better than a turbo any day ,and will help the engine last a lot longer also,if given a choice id choose a super charge over a turbo any day, good luck with i hope this helps.

Can a VW beetle soft top be put through a car wash?

In the simplest terms a turbo is driven by hi-speed exhaust gases and a supercharger is belt driven off the crankshaft. The turbocharger is more difficult to install and usually costs more but requires no HP to operate. The supercharger is usually cheaper and easier to install but does require HP from the engine to operate. The SRT8 has upgrade kits from the factory.Makes things easy. There are plenty of kits for the WRX though. That all wheel drive is great.

the turbo attaches to the exhaust pipe and as the exahust goes by , it spins the turbine.

the supercharger attaches to the crank via pulley & belt and the crank spins the turbine.

I have a black grill shell for my truck and i want to re paint it black do i still have to sand it first?

they both pretty much do about the same thing, pump air into the engine witch gives the effect simular to blowing an a fire making it burn hotter and faster

I have a 1987 Firebird Trans Am , it will idle but if you give it gas it sputters then dies. Fuel filter?

Turbos are propelled by exhaust while superchargers are propelled by pulleys.
Turbo
Pros - Through the rpm range you get more boost therefore more power, better high end rpm boost for high end torque and hp, more options like metal turbo, ceramic turbo, twin pair and twin sequential (can be quicker than superchargers), variable turbo(can be quicker than superchargers), different sizes of turbos (smaller ones are quicker but shouldn't be quicker than a supercharger and you lose higher end boost), can be more fuel efficient if not pushed too hard.
Cons - Typically more expensive, hard to install by yourself, kind of complicating because you have to add a bunch of stuff to make sure they work properly (turbo timer to cool down the turbo when you turn off your car, turbo gauge, pressure regulators, blow off valves, etc.), most are heavier due to so many components, usually more problems occur, turbo lag, more heat
Supercharger
Pros - Quicker than turbos because turbos have to spool before they work well (centrifugal supercharger are not the same because they start spinning later in the rpm range so they are not quicker but have higher range boost), usually simpler and lighter and also less complicating, easier to install, should last longer and have less problems, usually cheaper, can be fuel efficient if not pushed too hard, less lag, doesn't create as much heat as turbos.
Cons - Less overall boost, less boost in higher rpm, doesn't sound nearly as cool, they're uglier, not as variable (turbos can be modded with new exhaust system).

Can u buy the hinges where the parcel shelf goes in the boot for a corsa?

My opinion - If you want to be faster and want to win races go for the turbo. If you want the forced induction just for driving around in normal situations then go for the supercharger. I would pay the extra for the turbo and I would get variable paired twins but that has to be custom made. If I were to by it from the store I would go for the paired twin. It's your preference though. Good Luck with your decision!
