The old chemical used in gasoline to oxygenate it and increase it's octane rating, MTBE, phased out lead in 1979. Now, MTBE has been found in groundwater, and is currently being phased out by gasoline containing ethanol. In the US, unless otherwise stated, the gasoline will be rated E10, which means 10% ethanol. The E85 fuel is meant for cars 2006 and later, as they're built to handle things like additional corrosion and compression caused by the concentrated ethanol. You're car must be specifically built to handle that type of fuel, but the effects are very minor with a blend of only 10%.

Ethanol is better for the environment as it's A) not some sort of nasty manmade chemical or petro-based, it's mostly corn or sugar based, B) it actually creates much less carbon dioxide, and C) we're on the fence of realizing significant differences in fuel economy and pollution as new cars are built to utilize it more efficiently, probably with higher compression ratios and exhaust gas re-circulation (a turbocharger).
