Question:
The car is a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville SE with a 3.8 V-6 engine. However, it started up with the help of a portable jump-starter the other day. I've measured the battery and it reads a little bit below 12 Volts. I'm beginning to suspect other areas than the battery. What should I do next?

The battery is weak. It has enough voltage to pull the solenoid switch in but not for very long and it drops out and pulls back in. That's the rattling you hear. Check the voltage when you try to start the thing or turn on the lights and check the voltage. Replace the battery.you may have a short in your ignition switch
Low battery. Have your amperage checked coming out of your alternator, it should be 14.5 or higher to keep the battery charged. If it is good it is the battery.
sounds like the fuel filter is clogged. Your fuel injectors may need to be cleaned. Very costly though. Bad gas will do it too.

Battery is near dead. You need to have the charging system checked. Battery is not getting charged or something is draining the battery when you think the car is shut off. Battery will read 12 volts even if it is drained down so that it could only light an interior light. It would be part of the charging system check.
