Question:
I recently went to a Midas mechanic and was told I need these parts:
1) stabilizer links (front and rear)
2) 4 inner tie rods and ball joints
3) front lower control arm.
I was told it was approximately $1,500 to fix. I really don't have the money right now. The control arm I'll get replaced. But what I want to know is if I don't get the other stuff replaced any time soon (about a year or so) am I in any danger of at some point losing control of the car or perhaps having the wheels fall off, etc. I got the feeling from the mechanic that, at this time, the only incentives to get this done now are to stop a rattling noise in the rear of the car and to stop the steering wheel from vibrating at times, a problem common in my car anyway. Also he said it would improve steering (but I drove it from New York City to Syracuse,NY and thought the steering was perfect. (I have a '99 Mitsu Galant, 2.4 L, 102k miles, If it helps to know.)

stabalizer links probably refers to the swaybar links, those wont kill you, they'll just make the handling sloppy, ball joints and tie rods are a little touchier, if they break you can find yourself in a catastrophic accident, I wouldn't recomend leaving them for another year if they're already bad. If they've never been replaced its WAY past time to have it done, though 1500 bucks to do that work is OUTRAGEOUS, this is why you don't take cars to midas for repairs, find a local mechanic to check this stuff and give you an estimate. The inner tie rods are the only thing remotely hard to fix, and its really hard to tell if they're bad without taking them off the car, and its rare they do go bad.Does every dealership have a service center?
Get another opinion or 2.What could possibly be wrong with my mothers car??
Go get a second opinion to begin with!If what he says is true, expect to see your car on the side of the road with one tire pointing east, and the other west.
GET THEE TO A MECHANIC! NOW!
Tie rod ends and ball joints will kill you if they break. Try to imagine your front wheels moving in different directions. Get another opinion if you don't trust your mechanic, but don't assume that everything will be ok.
I have a question about my s-10 truck?
If Midas said my shirt was on fire, I'd have trouble believing them, even if I saw the flames...How do you clean your fuel injectors?
Take it to another garage, DON'T mention what "Midas said", and get a good second opinion. If your experience is anything like my "Midas" experience, there may be little, if anything actually wrong with the car.
