Question:
hello. does anybody know what the problem is with my car, when i just start to drive it the temperature gauge takes ages to move, after a few miles it will start to go up but then will drop to cold again. even after about 10 miles it will continue doing this and if i turn the heater on whilst moving you can watch it start to drop. On idle it will sit at half way (just right) but then as you start to drive it will drop again. The heater takes ages to warm up aswell, could this be a dodgy thermostat?
It is a 95m toyota corolla 1.3 sportif

well it is more then likely a combination of a bd thermostat and a bad ground in ur dash.it could also be a bad relay or it could be the gage and heater itself.Trying to look up this part for Honda Civic?
your thermostat is stuck open. it is an easy fix. generally u follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. u pop off the hose and there is thermostat. usually it will just pull right out. when u purchase a new one, be sure to get the fail-safe kind. this will cause the thermostat to stick open, like the one u have, when it goes bad. the other kind, will stick shut and overheat your car. if u go to advance auto, they will show u exactly where the therm. is. u may loose a bit of antifreeze when u pull it out. be sure to wash it off the driveway as animals like to lick it up and it will damage their kidneys. good luck, robYou guessed right it's the thermostat replace it and all will be well and your mileage will increase as well.

It really sounds like the thermostat is stuck open . thank God it stuck open and not closed! (^-^)When you get a "plug" put in to fix a flat tire. Is that a good way to fix a flat? Do plugs last?
Anyway ... that is an easy fix (not major surgery) . and cheap as well. This may be an indication that you need to also flush the cooling system on your car, which you might as well do anyway if you are going to go in and change the thermostat.
Please be sure to use the correct Toyota coolant for your car, ok? It matters. Your Corolla is about the same as a Lexus at the core . it is just not as large or as heavily optioned .. but I would treat my Corolla the same way as if it were a Lexus . Corollas are truly great cars ...
