Me thinks you have a worn out engine and such things that prevent oil consumption, like rings sealing and valve guides/seals sealing have ceased to function. Try performing a wet/dry compression test to see if it is one or the other or both. An indication of mileage would help. If this problem is the result of over a hundred thousand miles of driving, I suggest overhaul or trade in.Anyone think that manual transmission is hard?
White smoke usually indocates water in the fuel mix. Blueish smoke is oil. Probably a stuck ring or a blown head gasket. A faulty PCV vale can also cause excessive oil consumpion.Does anyone have a clutch adjustment manual for a IH 886 or ..?

That sounds like your head gasket is gone, so you are getting very hot engine " coolant" leaking through into where the oil is, causing a white vapor trail from your exhaust. That is just a guess, because I don't pretend to be a mechanic, but I had a car that had those same symptoms, and it was the head gasket. I really hope it's something simple & cheap to fix !

I'd say you've ruptured a head gasget or cracked the engine block, and are sucking coolant into the cylinders, where it is being burned and put out the tailpipe.

If you are a bit lucky...You've got a plugged PCV valve that's causing oil to get pushed thru the breather tube into the manifold. Test is to remove the oil filler cap and feel for constant pressure. "Puffing" is normal. But...constant pressure would be a sign of worn piston rings.
If you are unlucky...It could be piston rings, valve guide seals, or head gasket.
