you really dont need special tools for drum brakes. however there is a tool for the springs that makes it alot easyer go to your local parts house and ask for a "brake spring tool" the one you want looks like a hook on one end and is kind of long. let me know if you need anything else.Mike
My opinion is if you aren't sure of what tools to use, maybe you shouldn't be working on it.

The previous answerers were correct about the specialized tools that make the job easier...if necessary it can be done with a pair of needle nose pliers and a vise grips. One word of advice only do one side at a time so you can look at opposite side to put parts back on correctly.How do i get the airbag light to turn off in my 99 alero?
As a professional tech., I don't think people should be doing their own brakes. Yes they seem simple but there is a right and wrong way to do them. I fix a lot of the wrong ones every year. If you don't know what tools you need you obviously have never done drum brakes before. Give it a shot if you want but you're gonna be there a while.More Questions & Answers ...
