Question:
I got my oil changed today, after a bit of a sweat. You see, my car was scheduled for an oil change at 19,400 miles. Circumstances found me hundreds of miles away when my car reached the 19,400 mark. It wasn't until I was at about 19,800 before I finally got it changed today.
I have a 1992 buick roadmaster can anyone tell me what infl and rest light stands for?
The car runs perfectly fine and the guys at the auto shop didn't say anything, but it did get me thinking. How dangerously did I run my engine? Is going a couple hundred miles above the recommended mileage safe? Or was my car in dire straits?

I had a cousin who failed to change her oil in time and, as a result, she destroyed her car. that is the source of my cause for concern.
Thanks!
My vauhall corsa needs an engine diagnostic test does this have to be done at a vauxhall dealers ?
P.S : Pretend I don't know anything about cars.
Answers:
The 400 miles difference did not hurt your car. Oil changes are based on the fact that through use, your motor wears and this is picked up in the oil - hence the need for the oil filter, also by the life of the oil's ability to maintain its viscosity (fluidity, ability to flow), as it is continually heated, it looses this over time an is not as efficient in lubricating the engine. I try to have mine done every 3000 miles but my truck will not call for it with the on-board computer until the viscosity in the oil drops below a certain level. The one time I waite until the truck said to chane it, it was around the 5000 mile mark. That is why I say 400 miles will not make a difference.
don't worry, going a few hundred miles over scheduled oil change is not problem. even if you went a 1000 miles over, i still wouldn't loose sleep. but it's important to change it frequently.
Should i use synethetic motor oil or castrol gtx high-mileage motor oil in my SHO with 270,000km?
I don't think it's a big deal as long as you are not consistently late with oil changes. One time isn't going to kill it. It sounds like your cousin's car had an oil leak or something.a few hundred miles is not going to cause a problem. Ideally for the vast majority of people you would change the oil once every four months or four thousand miles. a few hundred miles on either side of that will not cause problems. Fear not..so long as the engine does not run LOW on oil...you have no need for concern
Looking for a decal for my car...?
The "Oil Change Industry" will tell you to change your oil every 3,000 miles but your owners manual probably says something closer to 7500 miles. A few hundred miles won't hurt.Does anyone know how to drain washer fluid out of a jeep reservoir? If so please help.?
I'm not sure I know a ton about cars, either, but I've gone a couple hundred miles over the recommended change time. Not only did I not kill the car, but it's completely fine. (And the incident happened a few years ago) I'm not advocating doing it often, mind you, but you should be all right.
They only "recommend" you change your oil every 3,000. How many people actually do it?? Sounds to me like your cousin NEVER changed her oil. If you can't get in as often as you like, use synthetic oil. Usually lets you go about 6,000 miles before you have to have it changed again. Costs a little more, but it's worth it. Unless you change it yourself, then it's a lot cheaper and it only takes 10 minutes.
Mercedes 240 sport Vreg making a funny tapping noise HELP?
You have nothing to worry about. If your car is only at 20,000 miles 400 miles over is not going to hurt you. Some people get their oil changed at every 3,500 miles, so you're definitely okay. It's good though, that you're taking such good care of your car. It will definitely last you longer! If I drop my truck how wide of a wheel and tire can I fit on my truck?
Your cousins car was probably broke before the oil change.II wouldn't worry about it. Just keep a regular schedule of oil changes.
Firestone, Pathfinder, Goodyear, Michellin, with one is the best? for a Ford Expedition.?
Not changing oil doesn't usually destroy your car. Not checking it and allowing it to run dangerously low does however, and I'd bet that's what your cousin did. What happens when you put sugar in a gas tank?
No, being 400 over won't hurt anything, especially on an occasional basis.
Is there a problem with switching from unleaded plus (89) gas to regular (87)?
The reason why changing your oil is important is that the lubricating properties break down from the heat inside your engine. The oil will break down and combine with particles forming a black sludge which will stick to moving parts if left over time. There are also small metal parts which come from the metal on metal friction of the pistons. This will also become worse without proper lubrication. The good news is that going 400 miles past your due date will not hurt your engine unless your oil level is down and there is no lubrication which causes heat expansion and seizing of the pistons. Try to keep up with your oil changes on a regular basis and if you are planning a long drive you may want to consider changing your oil before you go even if it is not quite due.I own a 1994 Saab 900s,some times the light check gearbox appears and the car stops shifting.?
Your car should be fine. I don't know much about cars either, but my car has a sensor on it that tells me when it is time to change the oil and it is usually a couple thousand miles over the recommended 3000 miles (even though I generally have it changed at 3000 anyway)! I'm sure 400 miles over is no problem!Don't worry, you are taking great care of your car!
How much should I expect to pay for a paint job?
i am on 6000 miles on my cavalier since my last. it runs fine but i may be causing damage. the oil just starts to become less like syrup and more like water over time, this makes the wearing process faster but not instantaneous. do not worry, but dont make it a habit to go over by 1000 miles and you will be fine.My 1996 camaro is overheating.?
hi, as long as the car maintains a good oil level, you can go farther than the scheduled time and it will not hurt your engine, that is why the shop didnt say anything. in your cousins case maybe she was low on oil all the time. so in your case its different so dont worry... get to know your car... check oil level before the oil change and that will tell you how far you can drive the vehicle above the recommended mileage. i know two people that never changed the oil , they just add to correct level.. and their cars are still on the go. some vehicles drop oil level way below the dip stick at 3000miles and its just perfect to schedule an oil and filter change. an engine could not tell between new and old oil, but it can tell if it is low on oil and it will not like it.. :)More Questions & Answers ...
