How can I tell if I have a bad motor? What should I look for?

Question:
I just bought a 350 small block chevy motor. It has Edelbrock carb and manifold. It sounds good, but I want to know more. Can I tell by the fluids or anything else if it is a good motor or not?

Not really. They could have just dumped out the tar and put in nice clean fresh oil before they sold it. A quick compression test will tell lots though, I'd suggest that.

Make sure the oil is not milky, this is caused by water getting in the oil. No smoke, no misses, no funky odors as it warms up, no weird noises, it is probably OK.

Check the compression on the cylinders, check the oil dip stick for varnish or a burnt smell look for leaks of oil or fluids.
