No, it won't affect the life of the engine, but it could affect both your wallet and the freedom you may lose. It is a FEDERAL offense to remove or modify ANY emissions reducing device. Period
It doesn't make any difference if your state or county doesn't "care" or have inspections.
Any time you are stopped by a policeman for traffic infractions, he has the power to inspect your car for violations. It could cost you dearly.
The cat has virtually no effect on the performance of the engine at all unless it has melted down inside.
This little "trick" will also cause your "Check Engine" light to illuminate.
No big deal you say, but it is the ONLY "Check Engine" light in the car. If something else fails, the computer doesn't have a "Check Engine" light #2, or #3. It has only the one.

No, but it will affect the contents of your wallet when you get caught. Without the converter, no legitimate shop will do any work on the car. They are prohibited by law from removing the converter. If there's any way that they could conceivably be blamed for removing it, they will refuse the job. You and your high school buddies will have to do all work on the car yourselves - you may not even be able to use the high school auto shop any more because of this, unless it's to put new converters back on the car.
