Question:
I thought it was the idler pulley, so I replaced that, but it is still making noise. I suspect it may be the alternater pulley bearing, but I'm not sure. It is an '98 Olds Intrigue with the 3.8 liter engine.
Answers:
Why would a 95 Chevy Beretta Z26 shake and blow out a cloud of black smoke?
Spray WD40 on each one, 1 at a time, and see if it stops making noise, just be sure you do it with the engine off and let it soak for a few minutes. If you get the belt wet with WD40, it can come off and cause injury if it hits you.hello... sometimes it could also be the belt that might need replacement, temporary solution is to spray belt dressing on it .. if it still making noise , you could be correct on the alternator bearing. quick fix is to put some oil in the bearing using a needle oiler without removing the unit out if you can.
purchase a mechanic's stethoscope (they are cheap) put it on the unit you are checking (be careful not to get into any moving parts) and proceed to every unit with a pulley the one that sounds the loudest is most likely the one I would take your belt off & double check it by spinning it by hand before I just replaced it
