Ford Taurus's?

Question:
Does anyone know anything about any issues with thermostats in the Taurus. I've had mine replaced once already and it never seemed to heat up. Mine is a 97 taurus and my son has a 99 and he seems to have the same issues, I contacted the ford dealer and he wants me to change the coil which is big bucks. I have a feeling its as simple as being a ford trait . ANy input anyone and please refrain from making negative comments abotu Ford in general! :-) Thanks.

If it's equipped with the 3.0L OHV V6 (not the 3.0L 24-valve Duratec V6), they have been long time known to have "brown coolant" issues. Those engines were assembled new with casting material left inside the cooling passages of the engine blocks. Consequently, the material would contaminate the green engine coolant, and it would turn brown. Several things would happen as a result of this. The impeller blades of the water pump would be eaten off by the rust, causing overheating issues due to lack of coolant flow. The symptom you describe would be another one of them. One coolant flush alone will not fix it. It would take SEVERAL thorough flushings of each of the cooling system components (the heater core, the engine block and ESPECIALLY the radiator) before you would restore the system back to maintaining proper coolant flow and condition. Otherwise Tauruses have been very good cars.

Are you sure its not heating up? Have you replaced the coolant temp sending unit? It could be warmed up but the sending unit could be bad! Try that first, its a cheap part thats easy to replace. Then go from there! Dont mess with the dealer with small things like this. Every dealer wants you to put a new engine or something stupid or un needed. Take it to a local shop and see what they say. They are cheaper then the dealer also! Small shops have to keep a good rep or they will go under.

With respect to the heater coil issue. There are 2 hoses that run from the engine through the firewall. At normal operating temperature, both hoses should be approximately the same temperature..If one hose is cold, you could have and obstruction in the heater coil. If both hoses are about the same temperature. Hold a lit cigarette next to the area just in front of the windshield, you know, where the wipers are mounted. With the blower on HIGH the smoke should be drawn down. This area is the intake for the heater.

Car heater question?

Do you mean there is no heat in the car, or the engine doesn't get warm?
Is the temp gauge reading normal? As the guy above said, are both hoses warm? Providing you can get to them.
If the radiator is hot, the engine is hot. Then it would be a problem with the heat/cool blend door in the ducting, probably a vacuum problem.

I guess everybody is confused as to what exactly the problem is. Does the heater blow cold air? or does the temp. Gage never go above cold?
