Does brake fluid ever just get low, without there being a leak?

Question:
My pedal in my '03 Impala just went to the floor and the low brake fluid light came on. Based on previous experience I would think that means a broken line or bad caliper (lovely), but could it just be that the fluid got low, and there's no real trauma?

I recently had the same problem with my car. I agree with what most people have already said, that your pads may be low, causing the caliper's pistons to be at their farthest point, which will use up a large amount of fluid. You might not think your brake pads are bad, but they probably are if your vehicle is a 2003 like you mentioned. Impalas have 4 wheel disc brakes, which are extremely easy (with moderate mechanical skills) to change. Just, make sure you watch your brake fluid level once you install new pads, especially if you added fluid while the old pads were on.

If your vehicle were an '05-'07, I would think there was a leak, but an '03 is just ready for pads by my best guess.

I can see the CV boot disengaged from the wheel on a 2001 Taurus anything I should do?

Not normally, unless defective. It could be an internal leak, that is the fluid is just swirling around in the master cylinder without transmitting pressure to the brake pads.

Whats wrong with my olds alero?

Yes, while it is unusual that the reservoir is not big enough to allow for the wear in the pads, you could have low fluid because of this extra system space created from the pad wear. This would be true if you started out with the minimum amount of fluid in the reservoir. Try adding some fluid and see if the problem continues.

Radiator fan relay?

low brake pedal indicate you have an external leak such as brake lines, hoses, calipers, abs hydraulic unit and mastercylinder or internal leak such as mastercylinder. brake fluid will NEVER get low at all. fluid leak or worn brake pads will cause brake fluid to get low .

Could you please give me your opinions and feedback?

Your fluid level wil get lower as the pads wear down, but it should not get low enough to make the padal sink. Fill it with fluid, and pump the pedal until you see it dripping out under the car. Then you will know where it is leaking. Good luck!

I have a 96 chevy truck with a/c leak. I've tried red dye but cannot locate leak. Any suggestions?

Well there are only 8 things that I can think of that it could be, most vehicles have either discs brakes on 2 or all for wheels and the drum brakes on the other 2. If your car is still stopping that's a good sign.
1) Low or no pads
2) Worn down disc
3) Low or no shoes
4) Worn down drum
5) Internel leaking (in drum brakes, brake fuild tank)
6) External leaking (caliper or brake line)
7) Mechanic forgot to bleed the brakes or didn't do a good job of doing it. Bleeding the brakes means that he took all the air bubbles out of the system after replacing the pads and shoes and topping up the brake fluid tank.
8) Mechanic forgot to put the shoes and other parts back in one of the drums (rear wheels) - this I have seen happen once, a person needed new brakes put on his truck when on vacation in the states and noticed the pedal going to the floor and the low brake fluid light coming on after getting his truck back. He was on the way back to Ontario when he had this done and when he got home he brought his truck into the dealership I was working at and I happened to be helping the mechanic that got to look at this guy's truck. The brake pads and parts were put together fine on the driver's side, but there was no pads or parts on the passanger side. When I took off the drum on the passanger side, there was just the caliper.

2002 Dodge Grand Caravan...Today Airbag light came on and is staying on..any ideas on why?

If you brake real hard then yes

Need help with a diesel engine.?

No one has mentioned that brake fluid is hydroscopic, it absorbs water. If your car has sat for an extended period, brake fluid will absorb water. As the water evaporates, the fluid level in the system will drop. If in fact the fluid is not low, just the light is coming on, you probably have a bad master cylinder.

2007 Trailblazer's tire pressure light comes on when it is first drove?

Guaranteed low brake pads! All impala's tend to do this at some point. I think mayby they made the reservoir just a little to small to accommodate for the caliper pistons to reach their maximum stroke. No worries, just change the pads.
