I have a 96 Ford Explorter and the 4WD light sstart flashing at around 30 MPH. this is on going and no one can give me an answer. They actually shut off totally but it seems I still am in 4WD.

Obviously, there's a problem in your A4WD system that is being detected by the GEM (generic electronic module, the module that controls your A4WD system). The problems CAN be either the 4X4 electric shift motor or wiring open or short in the system, the switch (as Dodgeman posted), mechanical internal problem with the transfer case (4X4 doesn't engage or disengage due to stuck or broken parts), and last but not least a failed GEM module (highly unlikely). As you can see, it's not a "cut and dry" problem that can easily be answered here. I can only say that it will become needlessly expensive if you start "throwing parts" at it in hopes of fixing the problem, instead of having it diagnosed properly by either the dealership (best choice), or someone familiar with the workings of your 4X4 system.i own a shop,and its a selector switch that's causing this to happen,you have to order the switch from a dealer right now it cant be bought after market yet,but that's why its doing this,,i have done a lot of these and the last switch i bought cost me around 60 bucks,and took less than 5 minutes to install,,ford knows about this problem,,but they wont recall them over it,but the will sell you switch to repair it with,,but do this before you go out and buy a switch,have a local mechanic look at it,and make sure its only the switch,and nothing else,good luck with it ,i hope this help,s.
