Help me with my 1996 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer?

Question:
every time I give it gas it gets real loud and shakes real bad. I brought it in and I was told it needed a tune up did that still have the problem, went back got the AGR valve replaced what ever that is ? I am still having the problem now I am being told it may be the torq converter? I know it is hard to diagnose without looking at it but I am so tired of getting railroaded at the shop!

OK, listen closely. Dad was a GM master mechanic in 1962 and he's been a Ford Certified Tech since 1980. This kind of problem is common but I don't know enough information. There are several things that cause these problems. Yes, the torque converters are locking so the clutch will go bad from time to time. Also the transmissions have given a few problems. Mostly, though, Dad sees ball joints bad. Does the steering wheel shake? Is that what is shaking or is it the floorboard? I need more info. I would say, going by this little bit that you have bad ball joints on the front of your Explorer. Good luck....go to a different shop. A dealership is OK but make sure you tell them the whole story about the other shop. They are just putting it onto the diagnostic computer. That thing should be thrown in the trash sometimes....as well as the so called "mechanics" that rely on only that and not practicality. Good luck and sorry for your troubles with today's mechanics. Yes, we need the computer diagnostics but there's more to it than that. I'm just as frustrated as you are with these younger idiots.

How does a differencial on a car work?

Take it to a reputable ford dealer. But be ready for some expensive repair bills.

Hi the heat in my car is not working all that good?

What's the mileage? Have you kept up on servicing (oil changes / check ups / transmission purge?). Its a hard fix with out seeing, it could be as easy as new spark plugs and wires, or fuel injection heads need to be replaced or cleaned. On a worse note could be the torque converter, engine mounts. I'm sorry but thats the best I got on this one, best of luck to you. Happy New Year.

Driving Standard!!?

It actually does sound like the torq converter. Usually though when the torq converter goes it will rev up really high then it will feel like your vehicle bucks forward or reverse. I'd bring it to a transmission shop and have the transmission shop do a diagnostics test on it. It would be alot cheaper to have them do a diagnostic test on it than it would be to just keep having your mechanic fix this and that and then another thing. The transmission shop can usually do it in about 1/2 an hour while you wait. If it is the torq converter I'd find a new mechanic real fast because it sounds like yours is taking you for a ride

misfire detection ??

No, its not the torque convertor, I had a ford pickup and it did the same thing. It is the "Harmonic Balancer" It is on the front of the engine mounted to the crankshaft. This part balances the engine, when they go bad, and some do, the engine will shake very bad when you step on the gas. Have a mechanic check it for you.

Where is the fuel pump relay located on a 1993 plymonth acclaim 4cyl auto?

Take it into the dealership with your father or boyfriend, some mechanics think women are stupid and they will take advantage of you. It sounds like you have a broken engine mount and when you give it gas the engine twists in the frame and opens an exhaust leak causing the excessive noise and shaking. (Its not an AGR Valve its an EGR valve - Exhaust Gas Reburner!) Visit www.fordforum.com for more responses. Good Luck!

Good Morning,

Colorado Will a old carburator 750 Honda run ok at altitude?

Please check the shop where you have been going and find out if they have a Master Mechanic. Also, if they told you the problem was a tune up and that did not fix the problem and then told you the EGR valve was bad and you replaced that, and that did not fix the problem, well I would start to doubt their diagnostic abilities.

As for going to the dealer, well they have good and bad mechanics just like anyone else.

Hwo do you know if your battery is going bad or if it's the alternator?

I have managed auto repair shops for a long time and my advice is to call, call, call, and then go see and talk to the shop owner or manager in person. Get down the yellow pages and call several shops. Call independent shops and chain shops. You need to establish a relationship with a shop owner or manager.

Is there something I can put in my radiator to seal a leak?

One advantage a chain shop has is you can go up the ladder to the national headquarters, if your not satisfied. Again do your home work. I have fiund over the years, Econo Lube Corp. does not care about their reputation or their customers. On the other hand I have seen Midas Corp go above and beyond several times. Any shop owneror manager who is smart will go the extra mile to make sure your not happy

Ask questions, like do you have a master mechanic on staff. Ask, if you rcommend a repair and it does not fix the problem, do I still have to pay for the repair. A master mechanic will find the problem 99 % of the time. Do expect to pay for the diagnostic labor, a mechanic needs to feed his family also. Any shop that tells you they will apply the diagnostic labor to the repair, figure they will apply the charge elsewhere.

Where is the alternator located on a car engine?

Last, but not least, get a second opinion, problems like a converter should be diagnosed at no charge by most shops. It is very expensive and always get a second opinion where the invoice is over $ 500.00

How important is having enough coolant in your car?

IF it's the torque converter it is expencive to replace. it is on your transmission. sounds like you need legal advice not mechanical. if you had it at a repair place and they did not fix it and charged you for it there is a legal question.
maybe what you need is a ford dealer and prepaid legal. let me know what i can do to help.
