Remove as much of the rust as possible with sandpaper or a wire brush then treat the bare metal with something like Loctite rust remedy or Jenolite ( most of these treatments need 24hrs to work) then spray on you primer and top coat.we call them beefburgers... all this sand and grind talk..well you obviously DONT know what youre doing... if its a 15 year old ford, let it rust, once you can see it, its too late as it rusts from inside out.

Hi there Ideally the best way is to actually cut out the rust as previously mentioned in an "abrupt" answer. Once you have cut the rust out you should grind the welds until flat and then apply a small amount of body filler to the area so that the repair is completed next you apply some etch primer then flat it with wet and dry and use some stopper to hide any tiny imperferctions, then paint with primer about 4 coats and flat between each coat, finally panel wipe the area and apply colour again about 4 coats, allow to dry thoroughly about a week unless you have a spray booth finally use some superfine paper and polishMore Questions & Answers ...
