When your head gasket goes you tend to lose a lot of water from your header tank. There will also be a white emulsion/gunge inside your rocker box lid cap where you fill up with oil. good chance your head gasket is gone...even a better chance your head is cracked....sorryIf the smoke smells sweet, its antifreeze getting into the combustion chamber, possibly through a cracked gasket. If it's automatic and smells oily, it's a transmission modulator. Still not sure, do a compression test.

If it is just white it is normal, especially in the cold. If the smoke is thick and a blueish white than it is oil and that is a problem.my dads head gaskets just gone the other day but he had black thick smoke coming from exhaust not white

There is a basic test to find out. Napa sells a cylinder head tester/block tester.It is a chemical test. Basically you will remove the radiator cap while the engine is cold, then bring the engine up to temperature (follow instructions in the kit) and test with the chemical. If it turns green, it's blown. Before you do that, if the gasket is really bad, the engine oil will be white and milky. Check the oil first. The last time I bought a kit it was around $70.00. It will cost that much to take it to a mechanic.

are you sure its white smoke or steam?if its white smoke then it anti-freeze burning and it got a leaking head gasket.but if its steam it will dissapear into the air,and nothing to worry about.is it all the time or just when cold?
