I have a 98 Tahoe. The inside door handle does not work. The door was hard to shut then wham. The inside handle does not open the door. The handle moves but does not open the door. The outside door handle still opens the door. Can someone tell me if I can fix this myself. Does the door panel just pop off and can I fix this myself or it is more hasel than its worth and should I just take it to a shop. Any feedback would be helpful

This just happened to my mom's 1998 Chevy. You can go to the dealership and order one I paid $65.00 it came with the whole handle and bezel ( the surrounding plastic). There is a little screw in the center right behind the handle part. You do not have to take the whole door panel off ... Anyhow you should also take the handle from your back seat door ( same side ) and put it up front till you get a new one...that way you can get out of the truck in a hurry if need be.Note they sell aftermarket ones on eBay and the web for Half the cost of the dealership but they are aftermarket and may be slightly different.

door panels on a chevy are usually easy to get off,take your time and remove all screws that maybe holding the door handle switches etc.the door panel itself will pop off but start at the bottom and work your way up to the top,lift door panel up,most clips to the door mechanism to the rod that works the latch are plastic,easy fix,as far as the door being hard to shut,there is a tool that raises the door to align it,take to body shop and they probably wont charge you to do it if hinges are not worn.hope this helpsif you are lucky, then you can take off the inside door handle cover, and sometimes the latch that connects to the handle comes off, and you can put it back on from there without taking the door panel off.....however, if its not that simple then the door panel will need to be removed, and you probably have a broken linkage somewhere....its a pretty easy fix, just depends if you want to put the time into it.....
The inside door handle is cracked wher the spring shaft is, the fix is to remove the door panel, this has plastic pins that hold it on and a few will break so when you go to the GM dealership to get the handle be sure to get extra door clips.
Also the handle is rivetteed on with one rivett, this will need to be ground off, then slide the handle forward to remove. Reverse steps to install. this repair will take an amature about 1.5 hours.

They're plastic and break sometimes, often enough that the dealers stock them.the rod has come off the latch, simple fix but you will have to take the door panel off to see what you are doing if you have never done it before, the hardest part will be taking the door panel off and you will need a special tool to get the inside door handle off as it has a spring clip that holds it on, you can get the tool at any parts store for a couple of bucks. good luck.
