What is the price range it should cost to replace a head casket?

Question:
My car was making a noise and over heating when I took it into the shop. They replaced the timing chain and water pump. I got it home the next day would not start, had it towed in. They said it needed a tune up. I went to pick up some thing it over heated. I pulled over and let it cool I did this till I got home. Took it in again they said its the head gasket. Is this something they should have seen in the beginning? I have put 1200 and still can't drive it. Advise Please!!

Tips on cleaning rust off of chrome?

sound like the shop is somewhat shady. a car that wont start obviously needs more than a tune up. if the head gasket is bad enough to make it not start, i would think they could have diagnosed it. at least after the new water pump. get a second opinion before you dump more$$$$$

you mention over heating,
check antifreeze levels, and color, if brown dots, theres a leak,
check thermostat,
check temperature gauge and sensors,
check blocked radiator or have flushed,
check water pump,
if it is head gasket, you may a have blown it at high speeds, try drive slow around town, if it works ok, the gasket is probably cause,

they will need to remove valve covers (and gaskets for covers are separate from head gaskets)

and heads to get gasket out,

this takes a longer time, but if car is new, check warranty, if used but newer, may be worth fixing, and don't drive at high rpm's,

try oil additives to block hole, if small may be ok for a while,

Can Clearcoat cover or help a real bad, faded paint job which feels like sandpaper?

You are looking at another $1,000 at least to get it replaced bepending on the type of car/motor you have and the place you take it too. Another thing to check besides the color of your coolant is to check your oil. When you pull your dipstick out and you see what looks to be water bubbles mixed in with the oil then it is your head gasket. Also, have someone stand behind the car when you start the vehicle. If it smokes white smoke when it is started or when it is warmed up, it is also a good sign yuor gasket is blowen. What kind of car is it? Best of luck to you. I was in your shoes about a year and a half ago.

To rakel i found it thank you very much?

sounds to me like you need to talk seriously with the garage you are using..many things can cause your car to overheat but if the thermostat is not stuck and the water pump is rotating,(ie the belt is not broken) then the head gasket should of been suspected in the first place.when a head gasket leaks between the cylinders and water ways then it is extreme heat and causes boiling.this is a simple thing to diagnose.water pumps unless physically broken, belt missing or leaking badly will not cause your engine to overheat.the timimg chain could well of been the cause of the noise but again nothing at all to do with the over heating problem..as far as the cost it is difficult to say because of location car type etc, most cars of today have aluminium cylinder heads that have to be skimmed when the gaskets are replaced, cost obviously depends on whether the garage does this itself or has to send it to a skimming/milling shop to have done.i do seriously think it has been the head gasket all along as you said the day you took it home it would not start the next morning, this would be caused because when it was stopped the pressure from the cylinders would stop and as the water would be still hot and have pressure in the water system then it would of leaked water back into the cylinders hence stopping it from firing the next day.seriously i think they have misdiagnosed the problem and cost you a fortune you neednt have spent.good luck.

88 chevy s10 4x4 front axle wont engage?

Actually yes. A good mechanic may have replaced this other stuff but he would have caught the head gasket as most likely the reason it was overheating in the first place. Though not hard to diagnose alas they are very expensive to replace. Alloy heads should ALWAYS be milled, if not outright replaced. I have seen small cracks show up 6 months down the road after the head seems to be okay. Sorry.

Starter Problems?

They should have seen this. when you take your car to a good shop, they are trained to diagnose the car. the people you took them to are untrained. this is a nickel and dime way of making sure you come back for more repairs. sorry to hear they got you with it. I would seek a pro and get it done right.

How do you clean your fuel injectors?

Check compression
Check to see if you see water in the oil and oil in the water.
Check upper radiator hose,(after car is running for awhile) Feel of it is hot. if it is, the thermostat works.
Check the Radiator fan, make sure it is turning on and off.
If not, turn on A/C to make sure it is the fan and not the sensor or switch.

1998 corsa using excessive fuel?

pull out your thermostat put in a sauce pan with water fill up to about 1 inch above the thermostat heat the water to atleast 200 degrees the thermostat should open if it does not then you need a new thermostat this could have been your problem in the beginning if it has overheated several times you probably need a new head gasket or you might even have a cracked head if you take this back somewhere to be worked on do not take it back to whoever is screwing you over if you have the head gasket replaced make sure they replace the thermostat and make sure your electric fans come on at correct temperature as this t could be causing a overheating problem there is a temperature sensor for that and a relay switch that can go bad with out your fans working there is no way to cool off your engine. my advise take your car to someone who is atleast ASE certified good luck
