Question:
My friend drives a 1991 chevy sprint 3 cyl with an auto tranny. He says that when he is driving a loud squeaking sound comes from under his hood. He can fix this problem by shifting his auto tranny from drive to Neutral and back to drive. Is this maybe a belt tension problem or is it more likely to have something to do with the transmission?

Investigate the problem more. It may be a tranny problem, like a bad band. I'm not sure if that's a band tranny or not. Could be. If he can shift from 1 to 2 and 3 without any noise and it only occurs while shifting with the selector in D then it would be a bad band. Otherwise, I would look closer to localize this noise before assuming the tranny. Good luck.Transmissions don't squeak usually. Sounds more like a slipping belt.

you've always heard," your first guess is the best". try the belt related problems, then the battery or belt pulleys.More Questions & Answers ...
