Is it a bad idea to only replace a clutch disc rather than the whole kit,ie new pressure plate, bearing, etc?

Question:
I have a 94 4-runner that is on it's last legs. I have replaced clutches before and have noticed that most all of the wear is on the clutch disc itself, usually the pressure plate looks fine and the flywheel can be resurfaced if it's needed. A new clutch disc will only cost $50, where a clutch kit would cost $200. The clutch is currently only starting to slip. I am only hoping to get another 15-20 thousand miles out of this vehicle. Have you ever heard of anyone only replacing the clutch disc. I know the answer most people would give is to say that if you take the time to drop the transmission replacing all the parts within a clutch kit will benefit you in the long run. The problem is I don't think this vehicle has a long run ahead of it and I don't want to put any more money into it than I have to. What do you think?

I have just resurfaced the flywheel and replaced only the disc many times. Never had a problem. If your throw-out bearing isn't noisy on depressing it, no doubt it's fine. A quick inspection as to it's being free and smoothe spinning on handling it will let you know. If this bearing is bad or rough sounding, change the pilot bearing too.

Valve Adujustement Estimate?

myself being a mechanic if you are not wanting to put alot of money in it i would recomend putting just a disc and having the flywheel turned
i would also recomend if you are a person who like to use the clutch pedal as a prop i would advise you not to do that and it will last longer cause when u rest your foot on the pedal you are putting pressure of the clutch even though you think you arent

i dropped my car key in the car...?

I disagee with previous post, if you just "rest" your foot on the clutch you are wearing the throwout bearing, you'd normally have to really press on the pedal before you'd get the clutch to slip.
I would agree that you can try just replacing the clutch disc and skipping the rest if you're sure you won't be in there again.

If your paying labour costs its a bad idea.
If you are doing it yourself and don't mind dropping the box out if it needs it then go for it.

Head gasket repair on a 1986 Honda Wagovan?

Yes its a bad Idea. It's like taking a shower and not changing your underwere. The pressure plate may look ok. But you have no idea what kind of condition the springs or forks are in. The throw out bearing is just as important. To move the clutch plate evenly. With out a good pilot bearing your input shaft will Not be aligned properly. The fly wheel is just as in portant. u want a nice clean surface, with out hot spots or cracks. Not to mention an even surface. The end result of not installing the kit. Is premature clutch failure do to clutch chattering and possible damage to trans.
P.S. Don't forget to check your fluid when u are done.

its a bad idea if your planning on keeping it,,because it wont last to long,,you would also need to have the flywheel re-surfaced in it,,if you don't,,it will cause heat spots on the new clutch disc,,id only replace the disc,if i was going to get rid of it,,if i was going to keep it,id do it right,,it might cost a little more now,,but you,l thank your self later on for it,,good luck hope this help,s.happy new years.
