What happens to a car if you drive with the emergency brake on?

I keep forgetting to pull my emergency brake lever and I will drive for a while before realizing its still on.Sometimes I wonder if it even works because it doesnt make any weird noses and is not hard to drive with it on. Do you think it even works?Will this hurt my car? I have a 2002 Mecury Mountaineer if it makes a difference.

You may have already worn the rear brake shoes so much that the adjustment is out of effective range...check your brake shoes and drums, replace what is needed, and adjust the emergency brake, it is an inspection item.
