Question:
I've just taken my mums car in for it's MOT. The Tester did it all, on his own.
When ever I've taken my car to a MOT station, 2 people work on it, cus 1 usually sits in it, & wiggles the steering wheel, puts lights on etc. while the Tester looks underneath to check the stearing & bearings etc.
I know I should've asked him if it was leagal to do it alone, but he was a bit of an a-ss

An MOT will need 2 people to carry out a proper test, the tester needs an assistant to operate the steering and work the handbrake on and off, so the tester can check for excessive play in steering componants and structural continuity, an assistant is also required to pressurise the brake system so the tester can check for leaks in the brake system and possible bulging hoses, an aissistant is also required to operate a lever at the front of the car so the tester can check for any excessive movement in steering componants and suspension parts, the assistant will then have to shake the front wheels when the wheels are on the ramp, the tester will instruct the assistant on how to do this.Sorry it's been abit long winded but until automatic MOT test lanes are acceptable( which is soon according to the most recent MOT special notice ) 1 man testing is NOT acceptable.
Hope this helps.
ps If the tester has carried out a test single handidly, how has he/she been able to check all the above, So is your car roadworthy?

It is perfectly legal to do it on his own - provided he checked everything to requirements, it is not a problem! Sometimes it is just easier if two people do it!I always do the second man's job when my car goes for an MOT! Rock the steering, indicators etc etc ...makes it easier! But then again the mecahnic knows me well and knows that I look after my car!

i have a 1991 ford f150 were is the starter?
I've alwasy seen just one person do the examination and the DOT price it with just one examiner inmind
It makes it easier if you have an assistant sitting in the car, but they don't have any responsibility other than to press the switches/ pedals for the testing of the lights. All the steering, bearings, suspension etc is checked from underneath the car with the wheels jacked up.
I have assisted my mot tester in this way when his assistant was not there.
Your mot is legal
Where can I download a service manual (not Hayne's or Chilton's manual)for a 2006 Toyota Corolla?
Umm I take your point. How do I safely get rid of hard water stains off of auto glass and paint without damaging either?
Your test may be legal but its certainly not a full MOT test as some parts of your car such as brakes and steering should be tested under pressure, if there is no-one inside the car working the controls how can the tester check things such as fluid leaks from your brakes under pressure etc. If you have any doubts check out VOSA, they will give you all the details you need to know as they are the governing body of MOT's.If you reported it he would be in trouble , and your car would have to go for retest , depends how seriosly you want the agravation
OBD port doens't seem to be work!?
its perfectly legal for one person to carry out the mot test, usualy if there is a spare man in the workshop he will sit in the car to rock the steering and push the brake pedal, but dont worry you will find that most testing stations are good,if you have any doubts you must give vosa a ring,Im in school and i cant get around a filter called "smartfilter", how do i get around it?
Some test stations have whats called an Automated Test Lane (ATL) which allows single person testing. Equipment on the ramp does the job of what the assistant would normally do. If the tester was not using an ATL they HAVE to use an assistant at some point in the test. It is not required for the assistant to be present for the whole test, just when they are actually needed. I'm a Mot tester myself and in my routine I only use an assistant in the last 10 minutes of the test as everything else can be done without them.If you personally witness the whole test without an assistant and without an ATL being used call VOSA and complain.
