I'm a beginner at this and was wondering what their purposes were. I dont understand the Double and Single overhead camshaft part. only familar with just the camshaft and crankshaft.

How much would it cost to get a new coat of paint on my car?
Double means that there is one camshaft and single means that there is two. In a single there is only one camshaft doing the work for all the valves. In a double there is a camshaft for the exhaust valves and another for the intake valves. A double is able to get more power because you can use more valves. The more valves you have the less restriction there is to the intake and exhaust gasses. You also reduce heat transfer from the exhaust to the intake sine the cams are seperated. The colder the intake air is the more gas that is mixed in and the more power you get.Fuel injectors, coil packs, 98 cavalier...oh my!?
Some SOHC engines still have 4 valves per cylinder. My Honda civic does. Cars with 5 valves per cylinder are all DOHC.

Single overhead cam Dual overhead cam.Toyota Corolla 93 brakes padles got too soft and not work properly?
There are 2 valves per cylinder with SOHC and four valves per cylinder with DOHCNeed help finding the fuel pump oil pressure switch ? 99 s10?
camshafts open and close the valves, single overhead cams run all the valves on that head (the part that bolts to the top of the block), with dual overhead cams, one cam runs the intake and one cam runs the exhaust, usually DOHC has 4 valves per cylinder making it more efficient and rev faster providing more power, SOHC can also have 4 valves per cylinder, but only provide a fraction of the power and efficiency increases of a DOHC engine.Go to the URL and it has pics and explains it all.
