Yes - if you get a spark, you get a boom! Why do you need a special fire extinguisher for cars?
Usually it shouldn't be dangerous. When a car engine runs there are sparks from the spark plugs and electrical power is running through the entire vehicle. For that reason there is the possibility of a spark escaping and igniting a gasoline puddle or gasoline vapors in the air and causing an explosion or fire. I guess the bottom line is why take that chance? That would depend on how fast it's going. I would suggest keeping it under ten miles per hour, unless you have a very long hose. As for me, I like to stop the car and turn off the engine.
How do I get my van out the mud?
There are several things that can happen if your vehicle is running while refueling. The obvious is that fuel is being pumped under pressure to the engine and could leak and cause a fire. Another instance is that fueling releases highly flammable vapors which can be ignited by a faulty plug wire or any other electric arc including static electricity in the vehicles body. That is why after turning the engine off, you should touch the tip of the nozzle to the metal of the car before pumping fuel. While most people do not do this and many fuel while their engine is running, and even smoke while fueling they are all tempting fate.No and yes. If you do it you won't die, but you can. The main concern is that with a running engine there is alot of electricity flowing from the electronics and the internal fire inside the engine, so with all of that there is an increased chance that a spark can ignite the gas fumes. I have seen people fill up their tank fine without anything happen and it doesn't effect your car. The whole premise is the odds. The odds of fire is higher with your car on, it might be one in a million but a million people do fill their tank a day so this prevents that one person from exploding.
how much would it cost me to restore my '84Chevorlet Monza?
Although it is against the rules at many gas stations and will push more gas fumes into the air because the return line is trying to return gas to the engine,(which may give you a check engine light) it really is not that much more dangerous than turning the engine off. I had never really done it until visiting my in-laws in western NY in the dead of winter and saw pretty much evereybody at gas stations leave the engine running while pumping. I have done it myself a few times and am still here today (sorry to ruin the ideas of the other answerers) I guess they did it to keep the car warm inside while they pumped. It is true that there are sparks in the spark plugs sealed in the engine but the chance of a fire is very slim.More Questions & Answers ...
