Odometer stopped recording.?

Question:
Dodge Shadow w/ 2.5L & automatic, electronic instrument panel (no speedometer cable). The speedometer works, but the odometer stopped working. I replaced the speedo head, but it still dosen't record. Replaced the speedo head again, same thing happens. Do the speedometer and odometer operate off different sensors? What could cause the same problem in three different speedo heads?
