thats the ka24e and its is comon for the timing chain to wear out the guides in the cover. which makes the timing jump and move around as the chain flops around. the first sign is a noisy startup it will sound like a rattle at startup cold. if not fixed the chain will rub a hole in the cover and leak water into the oil pan.Approximately how much is the going rate for changing head gaskets('98 Pontiac Bonneville V6)?

The cause of this condition is an excessively loose timing chain, which has resulted from the chain tensioner plunger sticking in the plunger bore. The plunger involved was a new component and did not exhibit this sticking condition before it was mounted to the engine block. Apparently, the tensioner body distorted enough to stick the plunger even though the correct mounting bolt torque values were used. In several instances just loosening the bolt allowed the plunger to move. These tensioner assembly mounting bolts require only minimal torque of 61-70 in/lbs.

Too small of a mounting bolt hole diameter on the replacement tensioner allowed distortion in the plunger bore and caused the plunger to stick. Increasing the bolt hole diameter to a similar diameter as the original tensioner, resolved the plunger sticking problem.

Have the catelic converter checked // also it could be cracked head or blown head gasket ... I also had the same problem when my timming was out on a sr22could be not getting enough fuel so check fuel pump pressure. fuel filter these engines r notorius for the t chain stretching possibly jumping a few teethwill have a chain chatter at starty up most of time. loosen distributer and readjust timing this may help temporary fix though normally this engine will bend a few valves if chain breaks also wears hole in timing cover by water outlet causing water to get in oil pull valve cover off look on d side on the inside cover by water outlet good luck hope this helps
