1997 Chrysler LHS with "bad Valve"...HELP I NEED ANSWERS!!?

Question:
Just bought a 97 LHS with 200,000 miles. Almost overnight it started sputtering and having acceleration problems. I've put new plugs & wires in it, had a new Injector put in and now the mechanic says the code shows a O2 sensor is bad and he also discovered I have a "downed (or spun) Valve".
Well I'm a girl and ignorant about Cars..what the heck does all that mean?! And what can I reasonably expect to pay for all that to be fixed?!

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news to you, but you chose a VERY BAD vehicle to purchase, especially at that high of mileage. Those cars NEW, were notorious for seizing up water pumps (which IS driven by the timing belt on your particular engine), leaking A/C evaporator cores (I don't think A/C is important to you at this point), and lastly the plastic fuel injector rails were recalled due to fuel leaks caused by the rails cracking. The fuel injectors being stuck open wasn't that uncommon of a problem either. That's not your biggest concern at this point. If you have a "spun" or "downed" valve, the cylinder head with the culprit valve will need to be removed, and most likely replaced. This is BIG dollars. Like the other poster already adivsed, you are better off replacing the engine with a low mileage used, or rebuilt engine, if getting rid of the car is not an option. Otherwise, I'm sorry but you're going to have to park to car for a while. There is ABSOLUTELY no way this car will even make 10 miles, let alone 720, from what you are describing. And $250 to replace an injector is not unreasonable by any means. To access the injectors requires upper intake manifold removal on this particular engine to access, which can be a hard job to those who aren't familiar with the 3.5L V6 (which is what your car is equipped with). Sorry for your luck, and I wish I had better news for you.

Basically that engine is hosed. The valve is damaged, and to take it all apart would be very pricey, and then might as well rebuild the whole engine. Would recomend a second opinion from another garage, one that maybe A military relief society could recomend to you, and even help you out financially. Am in the Navy myself. Am sorry to hear of your epidemic. Also the injector price and labor is probably about right, unfortunately. Another suggestions, is to get a rebuilt engine, and have that put into your car. Far cheaper than another car as well, and might have time to take the car with you when you have to move. Hope these ideas help some. Good luck.

Also, if timing jumped, means that the timing chain jumped its gear teeth, which pretty much means the guides that hold the chain taught are worn out beyond belief. Thus probably causing the bad valve concern.

bad car choice sorry but that car will keep falling apart try the sensor issue first if not working better it might be a an intake gasket .find a local public auction sell it for the most you can get and buy another one that is a Toyota or a Honda miles don't matter its your best bet.

first, the mechanic charge is fair as long as you paid it. if you can do any of the work yourself, you can save a lot of money. an O2 sensor at the auto pasts store will run between $ 20-30 bucks. as far as the valve problem, with as many miles as you have. a valve job would be the correct answer. it would cost close to the same amount to just get the 1 valve fixed. the cost for this depends on what engine you have. plan on 500- 1000 bucks if you have the mechanic do it. half that price if you do it your self. you may want to consider a rebuilt engine, guessing about $1500 installed. they usally carry some sort of warranty.

For the most part SILVERSTANG has it right on. However, if THAT car jumped time, it wouldn't run at all, never mind poorly.
The O2 sensor is responsible to the computer for fuel control. If it were bad, it might lose a bit of economy, but very unlikely that it would cause issues with acceleration.
The price for the fuel injector is pretty close to the norm.
I also would advise you to get another opinion, and seek a shop where you see the ASE shingle.

Sound like your definitely getting a head job that will cost about a G+ ($1000+). If he's offering the work for nothing let him do it if not take somewhere else. Still get a second opinion. find another mechanic and ask them if they can check it out for you.
the injectors are about $70ea (car uses 6 and he only did one) and an o-ring set $25(6ea)
