I have a 1985 seville 4.1 v8. I was driving down the freeway when I heard a lound noise like a tire had blown. Then my car started to sound like it had a deep sounding exhaust system (like it had balls). When I got home i noticed a hold in the muffler. What caused this? The car runs fine. Will it pass smog for CA Change of owner ship? How much should I be looking at for a repair?

1. The muffler was rusty and old in the first place.
2. You had a buildup of unburned fuel in the exhaust which finally ignited, causing your "boom".

You will have to replace the muffler to pass smog, and likely you will have to fix whatever is causing the buildup of unburnt fuel, too.

i own a repair shop,and it wont pass a smog test like this,,you,ll have to have a muffler put back on it,,and it usually cost around 50-100 bucks,,depending on which type of muffler you have put back on it,,you ,can count on spending at least a 100 bucks on it probably,,good luck ,i hope this help,s.,,ps ,age probably got it,,that and rust will do this,,good luck.Anyone own a Hummer and have problems with transmission shifting and engine light coming on.?
it was just due to go out...mufflers don't last forever and normally they give no sign of going out.Can the circuit breaker for the blower motor on a car go bad? If so how do you know?
depending on the garage you take it to...and do take it to a garage to have it fixed...it's a mess if you try it yourself. depending on what you have to have replaced I'm gonna guess upwards of $150 if it's just the muffler...if other replacements are needed then figure that in.

Carb is running too rich or you have a super dirty air cleaner. Bad O2 sensor will also cause a build up of volatiles in the exhaust system.2000 chevy blazer 4.3l problems?
It was probably just an old muffler. You may have hit something. A new muffler should be no more than $100 plus installation. It should total 125 or less for muffler and all. BTW you will probably not pass CA emissions with the hole in the muffler.2004 suzuki z250 has quit running think its the carb?
usually if the motor back fires it will cause holes in the exauhst assuming it wasnt rusty already. but i dont know anything about ca cause i live in INMore Questions & Answers ...
