diesel was mixed in with my regular gas (not my fault), and the mechanic said it would be 500 to fix but someone told me you can siphor the gas out and replace the fuel filter..is that a better idea?

If you do siphon the gas off, what are you going to do with it?And then if that doesn't fix it then what? This guy is a mechanic and is prepared to fix anything that may have been damaged and drain and dispose of the contaminated fuel. Although it seems expensive, it's cheaper than ruining your car. You said it wasn't your fault, maybe you can charge the person who's fault it was. You may have a claim on your insurance to pay for it, it may be worth a call. I know it's frustrating but don't make it worse by making a bad choice.
How much diesel was mixed into the gas if it was just a little bit it will dilute out and wont be much of a problem. You could siphon out the diesel and replace the fuel filter but some cars have a screen in them that prevent that.
if you don't wanna pay the money then yea
Siphoning or draining the fuel tank is just part of it. The lines and fuel filter along with the whole fuel system would/or should be drained/flushed. I don't know about $500 unless he is dropping the fuel tank to flush it out.
Gasoline is way too dangerous for the average "shade tree" mechanic to be fooling around with. The tank needs to be evacuated, but it must be done by a trained mechanic who knows exactly what precautions must be taken to do the job safely.

my brother is an idiot and put 2 gallons of diesel that was for my dads car in his '93 grand prix and all he did was go into town and filled it up with gas and didnt have any problems since.Does anyone know the firing order for a 1981 chevy p/u?
yes, you can siphon out the gas, or (since you are replacing the fuel filter anyway) disconnect the fuel line at the filter and let it drain into a pan. A little diesel fuel left over shouldn't hurt...Well typically you cant syphon gas out cause the newer cars have what they call anti theft system in the gas tank that prevents you from getting a hose in the tank to syphon it out. But you could drop the gas tank. Which usually is 2 to 4 bolts and 2 bands. Drop the tank dump the old fuel out and rinse it out with gas then put it back in. Then change the filter. and add fuel system cleaner into the tank and after that it may take a little bit for the new fuel to force the old out of the lines and through the injectors. The only other problem you might have which is a little unlikely is the diesel may have damaged your injectors, but like i said its unlikely. Doing it that way yoursel youd only have to pay for the filter and gas. So your looking at like $100 max. hope that helped

yeah it can be done, I'm a mechanic and we drain gas tanks for every fuel pump. You may not be able to siphon the gas out. Alot of the cars made after 1990 have a screen in the fill line that keeps people from putting a hose down there and stealing your gas. I simple thing for the average person would be to remove the fuel filter (that your replacing anyway). Then connecting a plastic host (exact same hose used for fish tank air stones. put the other end of the hose in some containter that can hold the fuel in the tank, then turn the car to "run" but don't start it...you'll notice the fuel pump in the tank is draining it for you!
