Question:
Every now and then my car will not start usually when I've had to turn my car off and on within a short amount of time or when it is hot out and also when I've run my car to empty and fill the tank up to full. When I try to turn on the car, it gives me a sound as though the engine is flooded with gas even though I never pump the gas pedal prior to turning on the ignition. Usually if I wait a few minutes after the initial attempt it will work. Any ideas what the problem may be?

Your problem may be the opposite. If you run your car out of gas, the fuel system usually has ingested air, which starves the injectors of fuel if you try to start it immediately. You will want to wait a few minutes with the key in the "on" position so the fuel pump can run and perhaps bleed out the air. Flooding is usually accompanied with a strong smell of raw fuel.Of course if you look around while trying to start your car and realize you are neck-deep in water, it's not your engine that's flooded, it's your neighborhood. Then it's time to trade the car in for a boat.

If you suspect flooding, pull a spark plug and see if it is wet. If it is, and it smells of gas, you have a flooding problem. If you have EFI pumping the gas pedal will not make any difference as to how much gas the engine gets for starting. A temperature sensor handles that job. If starting is hard, that sensor might be the problem. If you have an old car with a carburetor, you should not have to pump the pedal more than once to start your car. If you do your carb needs some attention. Best left to a qualified mechanic who understands carbs. Carbs are complicated and touchy.
