Should you change both headlamps on your car at the same time?

One of the head light bulbs on my car blow and my b/f said I have to change both of them. This doesn't make sense to me because now they might both go at the same time and I would be screwed if it happened at night. Who is right !?

I just wait for them to burn out one at a time. They tell you that at the auto parts store so they can sell you more parts. The headlight manufacturers say the same thing - just to sell more parts.
