Well, it could be the nut between the seat and steering wheel, or the battery gasket. You could be low on turn signal fluid, also. But honestly, I think it's your muffler bearings!

what is the recommended mileage for a timing belt change on a vw polo 1.4 se 'y' reg?

ANY WHO, I have a feeling that it is probably your U-joints. Just get under there and all that you have to do is to grab hold of the driveshaft and move it back and forth while looking at the U-joints. If you see or hear anything strange, just replace them. They are cheap and most rear wheel drive vehicles had a problem with them going out. No big deal and it will only take you about 30-60 minutes to replace, depending on how hard it is to get the U bolts off.
