Will low voltage damage a 12 volt dc motor?

For example, if I have a 12 volt blower motor from a car and turn it on with a 6 volt battery will it damage it? Also, someone told me the same motor has the ability to run under water. Is this true?

Yes it will run on six volts and no, it will not damage it. As a matter of fact, this is the major principle that the driver uses to control the blower speed for the heater and A/C. When the switch is on full blast, twelve volts goes directly to the motor, when it is on low, there is a voltage drop across the blower motor resistor which results in lower voltage at the blower motor, and thus, lower motor speed. You must not use it under water. It will not operate under water, at least for very long, and at best the motor will stop, but at worst you could be injured or killed depending on the power source you use.

a lower voltage i don't believe would damage it, it just wouldn't be able to run at full capacity. Also I wouldn't mix electricity and water man bad idea. You ever look at those warnings on hair dryers? Keep the motors out of the water unless everything is sealed tight and insulated properly.

If it's a blower motor or anything like that I would say yes it would not run fast if it runs at all but I don't think it will damage it permanently it will if you run a 6volt engine on 12 volts though

Running a 12V motor with 6V will require twice the amperage to flow through the wires within (windings). After a short period the wire will heat up and burn through, creating an open ckt. (the motor will cease to function). The motor will work under water however, with water as the medium instead of air, the resistance the motor encounters will be greater so the motor will use more energy and will run less efficiently.

If you are talking about a blower motor no low voltage will not hurt or damage it. Actually this is how your blower motor has different speeds. The 12 volts from the battery is dropped across a resistor coil or directed directly to the motor changing the voltage to the motor. The blower motor depending on manufacturer can run on as little as 6 volts some even lower. As for running under water, even if it could I would expect that it wouldn't last long when rust starts I would assume this would cause binding in the bearings. Yes I know what I am talking about I am a state licensed mechanic.

DC motors do run underwater, yes. Low voltage will not damage the motor. It will just run at half the speed. Also, if the load requires full voltage to actuate the system, you could potentially be putting your motor into a stall condition, where it will draw maximum current and heat up. If this happens, you'll probably blow your driving circuitry before the motor(transistor, relay, breaker, etc.), but the motor will heat up.
