It is possible it is a split or broken vacuum hose...does it idle a bit rough before dying? Look all around the engine compartment for small rubber hoses first. trace each one to both ends/connections. There are a lot of them...That would be my first guess.

The automatic choke may not be working properly.it sounds like a bad or stuck shut iac valve. iac stands for idle air control valve.they will get gummed up with carbon and such, and wont move. then the port that it controls slowly gets plugged up. it will cause the exact symptoms you describe. the fix is real easy, if you are reasonably knoledgeable about cars. if not, spend the bucks and have it done professionally.
