I have an 84' Lincoln towncar with a keyless entry keypad on the door, how do I find out what the code is?

It's certainly not something you can do yourself, you cant just 'pop it in' and jobs done!
You need the vauxhall computer this does a step by step fault finding search, a great deal of hassle, and no reputable dealer is going to fit your second hand unit.
How are you so certain the problem is the ecu? Thats what you need to clear up first, if you are sure then sorry but a dealer will charge around £50 an hour labour, for at least 4 hours work minimum , = £200! plus the exchange cost of the ecu, another guess here but at least £300 mnimum again, total wth vat etc around £600, minimum.
Now weigh that up on the price of an N reg car, max £500?
Yes I know you are most likely sitting there doing a bit of fu*king and blinding, and your right it is a Fu*king rip off, I've been there done that!!
My problem was that I could never prove to myself that the problem was actually the ecu. If you could find a way to actually prove that without it costng you an arm and a leg you would at least know for certain, another problem is that most garages and cu 'experts' will want to keep changing 'lumps' in the hope they will stumble across the answer, they will of course be charging you for this, regardless if they solve the problem or not!!
Sorry that I couldnt suggest a quick cheap fix to your problem,I binned mine, sold it for peanuts I have learned my lesson , I now drive a car that has no ecu, no fancy electric windows, no BS about it, all very very basic, nothing flash at all , but it gets me from A to B cheaply and there is not much to go wrong that I cant fix myself!
Makes sense to me.

I would only trust that one to an approved vauxhall garage. It's gonna cost a lot.

If not then if it doesn't come on at all but all the other lights do then you probably have a faulty crank sensor.

Any mechanics able 2 advise me what a pulley wobble is plse?

If all is ok in the engine management light department then you could have a blown head gasket and with the age of your car it is just not an economical fix at 7.4 hours.

If you buy a car part from a re-manufacturer,had it installed, doesnt work, who is liable 4 reinstall cost?

lucas and other motor factors sell a wide range of popular ecu,s reconditioned with a guarantee howeaver they dont under any circumstances accept back for credit or refund any electronic device if the sealed bag gas been opened or tampered with (so dont contemplate substitution as a process of elimination at their expence as they are street wise to this)

How many chickens will fit in the back of my car?

are you sure the e.c.u. is at fault ? if so it can be sent away for repair which is the best option as when it comes back it will be guarantied and you will not have to take it to the vauxhall garage to be recoded just plug it in and go. To find a firm that will repair it i suggest you try a local motor factors and see if it can be done through (that's what i do) or look for a firm on the internet such as BBA-reman.com

the only way of replacing the ecu without having to go to the bother and expense of all the dealer reprogramming is to find a donor car and take the ecu and the ignition barrel and key and the key receiver unit that is around the ignition barrel - black box with black ring around the key - these two components make up the immobiliser unit of the car as they are programmed together - the car will not start without either of them
