Question:
About 3 months ago I was driving and my car overheated (the temp. gage was up to 260) and I realized it had no water. I took it to the mechanic and he said I needed a new radiator so my stepdad, who is VERY good with cars and has done it before, replaced the radiator with a new one. Now, today, I smelled something funny and there was steam/smoke coming from the hood and through my air vents but the temp. gage was only around 215. It is leaking something that looks like rusty-colored water, but now my stepdad says he doesn't know what I should do except take it back to a new mechanic. He says it could be my water-something or my thermostat. Does anyone know what it is and could someone explain to me why it would overheat or what caused it to overheat? Thanks! It is a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, by the way, with about 150,000 miles.
Answers:
You say your car was running at a steady 215 degrees, which is too much...it may be the thermostat, water pump, OR both...I would replace both, to be safer...
Why is our car using so much water?
stuck themostat will make it overheat a bad water pump tooTransmission fluid question..?
It's your heater core. You have to replace it. It's not all that expensive or difficult to replace.i don't know the answer to your question. but

ur car probably ran out of radiator fluid/antifreezeHow big a tire can I have installed?
it could be the water pump. also check the heater coil, if you have lost the water in the radiator and there is no water on the temp sensor you will not get an accurate reading. take it to a good trustworthy mechanic cause it may be more serious than the aboved mentionedDoes the 1990 f250 come with a 6.9 diesel engine?
if you smelled something and saw fumes coming from your air vents, you have a bad heater core. if the core breaks, all of the water from your coolant system will dump into your floorboard and your vehicle will overheat. get it replaced asap.Original manual clutches actually last longer than 100k miles?
turn on your defrosters if your windshield on inside is wet heater coil leaking. Also check thermostat like other person told you. It could be both that is causing.Look for a water leak and check water hoses to see if collapsed. Like I said before maybe 2 problems. Your oil milkly? ouchCan I swap out a quad 4 engine with a 3.1 V-6 engine in a 1995 grand am? will it bolt up, ?
there could be a few things wrong .. it may not be the radiator in this case esp if you have had it already changed it .. if the car continues to overheat check the water pump thermostat ect as some of the people have suggested .. but did you get your head crack tested? see as result of already driving the car in such conditions its possible you may have warped the head causing your water and oil to mix witch can cause all sorts of issues including overheating. The reason you have to get this checked is that metals under extreme heat warp if the head isn't aligned probably with the block you'll get all sorts of issues happening with your car that will get worse and will eventually result in motor seizure that can be very expensive.sounds like the heater core needs to be replace
