Will a burnt out headlight cause my engine to run rough?

98 Hyundai Elantra, excellent condition, 50k mi. Lamp flickered out, check engine light came on, and engine started running rough at precisely the same moment. Strange coincidence. Of course I'll change bulb before doing more.

Probably caused by a voltage surge (caused by a shorted out wire somewhere), that's why they happened together. NO, the headlight has NOTHING to do with the engine performance! But the SHORT WILL. Find the shorted out wire, fast. You'll just end up blowing up another headlamp if you don't. This was NOT a coincidence. Get your engine computer analyzed and read. Then you will find out where the problem is. Autozone will do it for free if you ask them.

Should be no relation between these two phenomenon, unless your voltage regulator went out and roasted some electonics along wiht the light (pretty rare). Check battery voltage at idle and 2,000 rpm. Neither should exceed 15 volts. If they do, replace the alternator (it has the regulator in it).

Sounds more like your battery was going dead and the lights went out and it ran like crap at about the same time.
If this is the case, battery and alternator need looked at.
