Question:
It is a front wheel drive.
Answers:
1. With the engine OFF, and the trans in park open the hood
2. Stand in front of the vehicle and push the car as hard as you can
3. If a mount is bad the engine will lift when the car stops, i.e., the engine will not be connected to the frame and you will have diagnosed the problem.
Try that and you will know whether you have a bad mount or if there is something else causing the problem.

How come automatics can sit at a red light holding the brakes, but a manual can't?
A couple of possibilities. Check your driveshafts and constant velocity joints. Usually these are places where any play or looseness will generate a noise as the transmission takes up the play. Another possibility is engine and transmission mounts. These often fail with age, and allow movement of the engine/transaxle unit which generates noise. If you're sure that the noise is coming from the transmission, you may have worn clutch bands or plates that are clunking as they grab or engage. Have the transmission serviced and see if they find any plate or band residue in the pan which could indicate excessive wear in the transmission. If that's the case, it's rebuild time. Ouch.
Is it hard if you let your new car warm up in the morning before driving it?
