shock absorber is just that a simple tube filled with oil or air that absorb or stop the sudden moves.
(because the spring absorb the suddenlly moves but after that stay bouncing)

Car question?

an STRUT include spring and the shock absorber.

How much should it cost for a new alternator?

a shock absorber is a reasonably small gas, oil or in some cases compressed air adjustable tube with 2 sections and it is seperate 2 the springs on your suspension, a strut is much larger of the same design that includes the coil spring and forms a physically active part of your suspension.
they need replacing if u notice they are leaking oil or if your car bounces more than 3 times when u push on it with your hands.

what happens if a car start but later cut's off?

OK THE DIFFERENCE IS THE STRUT IS KEPT UNDER PRESSURE BY A COIL SPRING AND A SHOCK IS KEPT IN PLACE BY THE BODY OR THE SUSPENSION NORMALLY YOU CAN REPLACE SHOCKS EASY BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND STRONGLY TO HAVE STRUTS REPLACE BY A MECHANIC CUZ IN REPLACING STRUTS THERE IS A SPECIAL TOOL IS INVOLVED PLUS AFTER YOU REPLACE THEM YOU WILL NEED A WHEEL ALIGHNMENT HOPE THIS HELPS
