I have an old Jeep grand wagoneer that has been sitting all winter. I charged up the battery and it turned over just fine. Was running smoothe for a minute or so, then it started shaking.then REALLY bad. I shut off the engine for fear it was gonna shake apart. Any ideas??

well if it's been sitting all winter than either your gas is stale or somehow things got gummed up. could just be new spark plugs. Id look into getting some fresh fuelHow long do brakes usually last om your car before they have to be replaced.?
<edit> I figured I should add. I have had two jeep cherokee's (a 1990 (wagoneer) and a 1985). my 85 did this after I went to school and came back ( 6 months later). Run out the old gas a new set of spark plugs and I was good. By the way your 1987 grand DOES NOT have air ride suspension. even if it did it wouldn't be acting so erratically.

check to see what kind of shocks your car has. some SUVs come with air compressed shocks which is pretty much a bag of air that cushions... if somethings wrong with the compressor or the bags, it could explain what's happening.maybe the distributor cap is letting in moisture, preventing the plugs from firing properly, or simply a spark plug wire came loose.
Broken motor mount. Maybe new coil and spark plug wires.

yup... get a complete tune up... what probably happened was that the plugs were going bad before its hibernation, or oil sludge or something like that. what i would do before i spend real money is to get a COMPLETE tune up, plus plug wires, air filter oil filter, oil change, tranny fluid change, and before i even get it on the road really throw some fuel treatmen in the gas tank. if that dont do it, you know then its a bigger problem then what you were expecting. then you can decide if you wanna spend the money on itHow to replace car thermostat?
definitely an engine problem...was there noise while it was shaking?
the engine might have a broken rod.
if it was shaking badly and looking to stall.it was an engine problem again..maybe your valves need cleaning.
for the first problem..you can always buy an engine from a wreck..and have it installed.
for the second problem..your valves can be cleaned...hopefully before they have to be replaced.

It's shaking because all the cylinders aren't firing. Probably just water in the gas from a winter's worth of condensation.
