Question:
For the last 10 months,I've owned my moms ( one owner) 1992 Buick Skylark 6 cylinder ( less than 75,000 miles on it). It was always garaged, but now is outside parked. There is a "winding" noise from the engine that has gotten louder in the last 4 weeks or so when starting it or accerating engine. If Im coasting,or not stepping on the gas pedal to get up to speed, its Quiet! ( IE: including when Im Up to speed using cruise control) Its" Purrfectly"Quiet when in neutral. No one can figure out what this noise is! My son swore it was the alternator and replaced it today. That made No diffrence! It was Lubed in summer,Tune up with oil change ,new Plugs etc. also. Just had Brake lines replaced and new Brakes this Fall.
The winding noise is def. from engine, around alternator, Fan, area.
Any Ideas what the "winding noise is?

take the serpentine belt completely off, start the engine, and see if the noise is gone. if it is, you know it's something belt driven. shut the engine off, and spin each pulley by hand, until you hear one thats rough sounding. that would be your culprit. idler or tensioner pulleys are good bets. a/c compessor is another possibility. p/s pump, too, but not so much. you said alternater is new. check it, too. water pump is another good bet.how do i bypass the neutral safety switch on a 1988 ford bronco - fullsize 302 v8 efi w/c6 tranny?

if you are experiencing any heat(temp) readings that are high, and find very light amonts of a green substance under the front of your car it is possible you haave a waterpump issue. the bearings on the little hole underneath could be going bad. the other issue is the possiblity of a bad tension pully(the one used to take off your belt.Renault Megane 1997 with broken speedo?
did your son change the belt as well. check first for cracks or glazed/shiny surface. if you did change belt, 75% on the idler or tensioner pulley. 25% on water pump, but that would "normally" squeal at any amont of accelleration.Hi, I need front pads and rotors for my 2001 Buick Regal, which ones are the best to buy?
well it could be a cupple of things it could be a pully or belt but seems how it only happens when you are moving it sounds more like a wheel bering gong bad and making it soun like its comming from the motor area andto check that its easy jack the front of he car up and grab the tire at an angle and see if it can move or as its making the noise and you are cler try turning te steering wheel to the right or left and see if i gose a way and any questions you can feel free to im me or e mail meMore Questions & Answers ...
