Gas gauge on an 89 camero?

My daughters 89 camero's gas gauge doesnt seem to be working right. We filled it up the other day and the needle is constantly moving up and down. When we turn off the car it goes down when we start it up it goes up. When we r driving it will say 3/4 tank to 1/2 tank. The guys at Jiffy Lube said its a chevy thing but how can we tell how much gas there really is? According to our mileage we have only driven 89 miles since we filled and I think the gauge says we have 1/2 tank but then it goes up to 3/4. How can we tell when we need to fill it without running out of gas?

My friend's '93 Lumina APV has the same problem. Have the fuel pump replaced, until then just take your average MPG and multiply it by the number of gallons the tank holds.
