97 Ford Taurus, engine won't shift over into next gear after 30 mph when driving, what's the problem? Help

Question:
Someone told me it was a sensor module in the engine. Where can I find it and can I fix it or only a mechanic? Once my car reaches 30 MPH when driving, the engine starts to races causing the battery light to come on. I would like to keep the cost of the repair to a minimum if at all possible. Thank you!!!!!

Does the speedometer work? If not, that means your vehicle speed sensor (VSS) has either worn teeth, or failed electrically. Does your CHECK ENGINE light come on? If so, you need to have the codes pulled to get a better idea of the problem. Hope this helps.

If you are not inclined to do the work yourself, take it to a reputable shop, and ask them to do a engine scan, and see if you can get the scan for free, IF you allow them to do the work.
