Question:
whats the highest octane rated fuel available near you? about 30yrs ago we still had 5* in the uk - that was 100. now it just regular and super unleaded - 93 and 97 respectively.
Answers:
We also used to change ports or metering rods in carbs to lean them out a bit, and some of us could also be found fiddling the advance on our timing.
Since modern engines seem to advance the timing until an engine knock occurs, I've often wondered whether it wouldn't make more sense to put Colorado back on a more normal octane standard. Seems to me we might see some difference in engine performance with the possibility of more advanced timing that might well result.

I use the super unleaded in my Sunbeam Rapier and find that the fuel consumption is much improved. what type of car are you wanting 100 octane for, the only one that had to have that was the Rover 2000, which with retuning would probably work on 97 octane. Many of the older cars were for export to places like Africa and had a low octane carburetion system fitted to compensate for the poor fuel in those countries.Do Tires feel different after tire rotations?
shell 5* was 101 octane vehicles with 10 to 1 comp ratio need it. aircraft fuel is reputed to be 120 octane. the government has to accommodate the need for 5* for vintage/classic vehicles for a set period after the implementation of unleaded fuel. unleaded ok for town use. additive needed for motorway use. or exhaust valves burn out.More Questions & Answers ...
