1995 Ford Explorer Transmission Problem - Please Advise?

It started off by taking a really long time to warm up the gears, the drive gear would take long 2 pick up. Then one day we were driving I parked then it would not reverse at all. So the truck does not reverse does drive forward but only goes about 45mph and the engine sounds like you are really pushing it.
FINALLY now we're about 2 take it to be fixed but don't know if I need a overhaul (soft parts) or a rebuild (hard parts)?

After having the rebuild, it might be a good idea to get rid of it, simply because sometimes with all the revving, and extra stress you put on the engine from driving it with a bad tranny, other things might start to go bad when the new/rebuilt one is installed

My tranny went on my 92 explorer too ended up paying 2000 dollars to fix best to get a used one yerself otherwise it adds up. You probably need a major fix, talk to a trusted tranny shop and find out, then you may be better off buying a whole new truck that has a newer tranny and/or selling your truck cheap for parts to help pay for the new one. Trust me I know from experience.

I would look at a junk yard for a used transmission. Some places will charge you an arm and a leg for an overhaul. If you go for an overhaul, look at how much your vehicle is worth too. No use spending $1500 if your Ford is only worth say $4000. I have a 92 Ford Explorer. I went to the junk yard, found one for $400 and changed the transmission oil (I used synthetic oil) and filter. It is not really that hard to do. IF you do it make sure when you disconnect the two transmission lines, to blow out air thru one of the lines which will blow out the old transmission fluid still in the radiator part. That is how your radiator oil cools off like your water does. If not, look around for a small shop and ask them what they will charge to replace transmissions. Find out prices ahead of time. The junk yard usually gives a 30 day warranty and you want to drive your vehicle asap to find out if the transmission works properly or not. I always look at the worst scenario case. I have yet to return a transmission for warranty YET from the junkyard in the times I have gotten one.

i recommend getting quotes from different shops to see how much money it costs. they should tell you if it needs to be rebuilt or just an overhaul. then consider if it worth the effort to fix it or buy another vehicle.
